Sicily, a land of sun and sea with an ancient history, holds unique artistic traditions handed down from generation to generation. Among them, the famous ceramic Moor Heads are one of the most fascinating expressions of local craftsmanship, steeped in history, legends and symbolism.
Caltagirone's Moor heads are ceramic vessels depicting human faces, known for their rich details, vivid colors and intense expressions. Their origin dates back to the period of Arab occupation in Sicily, between the 11th and 12th centuries, when the island was a crossroads of cultures, ethnicities and traditions. According to the most widespread legend, these works of art were born out of a tragic love affair between a young Sicilian woman and a young Moor, culminating in an act of jealousy and revenge, resulting in the first Morish head.
These creations are highly appreciated by both tourists and residents, who use them to adorn their homes, bringing a touch of tradition and color. They represent an element of great symbolic and cultural value, reflecting the history and traditions of the city of Caltagirone. Each piece is unique, made with skill and care, and is an important artistic treasure for the whole of Sicily. The Moor heads of Caltagirone are not just decorations, but true works of art that tell stories of a rich and fascinating past, keeping alive a thousand-year-old tradition
What is the legend of the Moor heads?
There are two different legends related to the story of the Moorheads. Both date back to 1100 AD and tell of a love story between a maiden from the Kalsa district of Palermo, who fell madly in love with a Moro soldier.
Simbol of passion
In one version of the legend, the soldier deceived the young woman: he was already married with children and intended to return to his homeland. When the girl discovered the betrayal, she killed her lover in his sleep, beheaded him and used his head as a pot for basil, displaying it on the balcony. The basil grew lush, arousing the envy of neighbors who began commissioning vases in the shape of heads, giving rise to Moor heads (also called Turk Heads), a symbol of passionIn another version of the legend, the two lovers were both killed and beheaded by the girl's family, who disapproved of their relationship.Their heads were displayed as a warning against illicit unions.
